Signs You May Need a Root Canal
Not every toothache means a root canal is needed, but certain symptoms are consistent signals that the pulp may be involved. It is worth scheduling an evaluation if you notice:
- Persistent, deep pain that does not resolve on its own
- Sensitivity to heat or cold that lingers well after the source is removed
- Pain when biting down or applying pressure to a tooth
- Swelling or tenderness in the gum tissue near a tooth
- Darkening of a tooth or a visible pimple-like bump on the gum

Removing a tooth without a replacement plan leads to bone loss, shifting of neighboring teeth, and the added complexity and cost of implants or bridges down the line. Preserving what you have is simpler, more affordable, and better for your long-term oral health.
When extraction does become necessary, whether because a tooth is too compromised to restore or because an implant is the right path forward, Dr. Watts and Dr. Thachil coordinate that care as well. Their background in surgical procedures, including extractions and implant placement, means you receive consistent, informed guidance at every step rather than being sent elsewhere for answers.
Recovery and Aftercare
Some tenderness around the treated tooth can follow a root canal, and it can often be managed with over-the-counter pain relief as your doctor advises. Until your permanent restoration is in place, avoid chewing hard foods on that tooth. Keep brushing and flossing as usual.

Sedation Options for Endodontic Procedures
For patients who feel nervous about root canal treatment, sedation is available to make the experience more manageable. Our sedation dentistry options give you a say in how your visit feels.
Level 1: Nitrous Oxide offers a light, floaty calm that just eases the edge off while you stay fully awake and can drive home after. Commonly known as nitrous, laughing gas, or simply “gas”.
Level 2: Relaxation Medication involves one prescribed pill taken before your visit, keeping you awake and responsive while feeling noticeably at ease, with a ride home arranged. This option can be combined with conscious sedation as well.
Level 3: Conscious Sedation uses in-office medication to bring on a dreamlike, deeply relaxed state, with a ride home required. You and your care team choose the option that fits the procedure and your comfort level.

Dr. Watts is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry with residency training in implant and surgical procedures. She is also completing the AAID MaxiCourse and is on track to become a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Both doctors have completed additional coursework to administer Level 2: Relaxation Medication in accordance with the Georgia Board of Dentistry’s regulations, and Dr. Watts is permitted to administer Level 3: Conscious Sedation. Dr. Thachil holds a Doctorate in Dental Medicine and a Master’s in Biology from the Dental College of Georgia, with training in dental implants.
